Summer Bible Study “Women in the Bible”
Our church Bible Study will be looking at the role of women in the Bible. While Biblical history seems generally patriarchal, many women made important contributions to our faith. Before Israel had a monarchy, a woman named Deborah was the de facto leader of the nation. Not merely an administrator, Deborah led her people to victory during a time of war against a superior power. Esther, an exiled Israelite, became queen of Persia and saved her people from the ancient equivalent of ethnic cleansing. The Book of Ruth, disguised as a poignant love story, effectively actually challenges certain points of the Law given by Moses. Some women left a fearsome legacy, such as Jezebel, whose name still carries a negative connotation.
Jesus, Paul, and the original twelve apostles figure prominently in the New Testament, but many of the first Christian leaders were women. While Jesus’ mother Mary receives much attention, Jesus also had sisters and friends who were women. Do you know which book of the New Testament a woman may have written? Come and find out, learn about the beginnings of our faith and the woman who at great cost nurtured the first Christian churches.
We will be meeting on Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm. Place to be announced. Watch your bulletin for details! ... or call Eric Feustel at 485-4857
